Who am I

Who is Adventure Lorax?

The Adventure Lorax is me.

It all started over 20 years ago when I bought the lorax patch you see on my hat. This is the third hat that has carried this patch. Even though I have many hats I have always tended to wear this one when doing outdoor activities. So, over time I got the nick name of "Lorax". And at one point in my youth I worked for Green Peace and as a kayaker do volunteer work doing river cleanups. So, I not only speak for the trees but nature as a whole. I am a firm believer in "Leave no trace".

I have done a little whitewater rafting. I am the one at the front in the white helmet.

I never was big into it. I only went a few times with different outfitters. It was just added excitement and another thing to check off in a list of adventures.

I have also been know to do some canoeing in my life. This photo is from a trip I took on the Moose River.

Canoeing never became a passion. it was a way to get to remote campsites and carry lots of gear. Maybe one day I will look into whitewater canoeing. I

One of the nice things about a canoe on a slow moving river is the time it offers to view nature. What is the point of getting out into nature if you do not observe and enjoy the beauty it has to offer?
I am also a rock climber or should I say I was. I climbed for over 20 years. I was an instructor for 16 of those years.

I had to take some time off after a back and hip injury from a fall while on the ground surveying a site for a Met Tower, during a snowstorm.  Some times you have to keep to the work schedule.

During that hiatus most of my climbing partners moved west.

During my younger days I was also a surfer. I lived in North Myrtle Beach and was pretty much a beach bum.

These photos are the only ones that I have of me surfing and they are of very poor quality. They were taken just a few hours before hurricane Hugo made landfall.
There is a lot to be said for youth and an estimation of skill. I was sure I knew what my chances of survival were and I was willing to take the risk. I was out with only 2 other people and we decided to go in as the Holiday Inn pier started to shift and make breaking sounds.

I am also into hiking, biking and having fun with my furry children. I believe an active life is a life well spent. This does not mean I am always on the go. I still enjoy a little down time for reading and watching a movie.

I enjoy traveling, mostly to coastal locations but also to the mountains and lakes. Generally I avoid cities like New York and Las Vegas. They really have nothing to offer that I am interested in.

Yes I know there is kayaking in New York but you have to deal with the crowds. I really do not like lots of people. Crowds make me anxious.
Now most of the time you can find me kayaking. I travel for kayaking and do camping trips from my kayak. Calm black waters, surf, ocean, rivers. If there is great nature or challenging waters I am there.

I also am a fan of good beers and beef. I enjoy stouts, porters. lagers, ales. Beer is what makes the world a better place.

And how sad would life be if we did not have fresh jalapenos?

Now you know who the Adventure Lorax is. Does it make you happy to be so well informed? I hope my little tale has added meaning to your life. Now check out the rest of my stuff because it will be much more informative than this page.
